Nestor Myska Memorial Fund

The Nestor Myska Memorial Fund

To everyone who met Nestor Myska, they would see a quiet man that listened more than he talked, but conversation with him would reveal a keen mind and an educated opinion about things around him. A man who prized hard work and family spirit, who always had a sparkle in his eye and a gentle smile to greet friends.
The Interlake Community Foundation is pleased to announce the Nestor Myska Memorial Fund established in October 2020. His family has created an undesignated fund in Nestor’s name as a legacy for his community.
Nestor was born in Winnipeg in 1930 and passed away in Stonewall Hospital at the age of 88. He is survived by one sister, two brothers, many nieces and nephews and their families. His family moved to Gordon in 1934 after purchasing the general store. Nestor attended East Rosser School and Isaac Newton High School in Winnipeg. He worked as the bartender for his family when they operated the hotel in Laurier, Manitoba. In the early 1950s he worked for Morrisons Garage at Gordon. Later Nestor began a life long career as a dragline and crane operator, working all over Manitoba and nearby provinces. He built the initial grade of the road into Bissett and progressed until he operated the largest crane for Litz Cranes, building the Fort Garry Place Complex among others. While Nestor lived on Main Street near the Perimeter, he began a side business of repainting vehicles at which he excelled. In 1975 Nestor purchased his first farmland near Gordon and began a second career as a part-time farmer. Eventually he established a yard site where he built a home, garage and machine shop finally moving to live there in 1983. After retirement from Litz Cranes he became a full-time farmer. Summers were spent enjoying auctions with his close friends, planting a huge vegetable garden and working on a wide variety of equipment. Nestor was an innovator and fixer, able to make old equipment run and work for him. If someone needed a special part for a project or repair Nestor would have it for you.
Although Nestor had travelled on holidays to different countries, Gordon was always his home for family and friends. He was happiest joining them for any gathering from the weekly coffee group at his friends’ home to celebrations at Thanksgiving and Christmas with family. Nestor appreciated a cup of good coffee, “black if its good, only have to add the other when it’s bad” he’d say.
This fund has been established to benefit the community that Nestor called home.

The Interlake Community Foundation is very proud to be the steward of this legacy.
