Percy and Mary Durham Endowment Fund

Mary and Percy Durham came to the Interlake area in 1938 when they bought their farm in the Blackdale area, south-east of Stony Mountain. It was a small mixed farm where they grew grain and raised cattle. They worked hard and added to their income by keeping some laying hens, growing extra garden produce and had an orchard of crab-apple and other fruit trees. Eggs and produce were sold to the Penitentiary for a number of years. They also operated the Blackdale post office out of their home until the rural mailboxes were introduced. They had no children of their own but were dearly loved by all the neighbourhood kids who came to get the mail and buy candy from them. Besides being fully involved in the community life of the Blackdale area for so many years, they really enjoyed seniors curling at the Stony Mountain Curling Club.

Percy passed away in 1994 and Mary moved to the Manor in Stony Mountain where she lived until being hospitalized early in 2011. She then resided in the St. Norbert Personal Care Home until her passing, at the age of 106, on December 31,2011.

Percy and Mary are strong examples of the hard-working men and women who helped make our communities and our lives so much better today. They totally enjoyed their quiet lifestyle and the friendships developed over so many years. They always had a strong commitment to giving back to the community and they were proud to make this bequest to the Interlake Community Foundation.
